Cameos are a 2000 year old art form of sculptured, hand-carved jewelry. Each cameo is a true one-of-a-kind work of art, possessing a timeless beauty. The world's finest cameos are carved by a very few master carvers.

Gem of the Day is pleased to introduce a magnificent cameo from the master carvers in Torre Del Greco, Naples, Italy. The classic Venus design has been carved by these master carvers for hundreds of years, the art passed from down from generation to generation.

Venus is the ancient Goddess of Love and Beauty. Master carvers are able to carve the intricate design shown above, with the addition of flowers and ribbons in her hair and the gentle folds of her gown. Lesser carvers omit these images or the quality is greatly reduced.

Our "Venus Cameo" is carved by hand and no two are ever exactly alike. The cameo is carved from the conch shell, which is imported into Italy from the West Indies or Madagascar. Only one to three cameos can be carved from a single shell. The design is carved from a light colored vein layer by layer, into the lower and darker background. The finest cameos have a deep three dimensional image.

Our heavy 14k gold brooch frame is custom made to hold each individual cameo. A hidden bale folds out of sight when the cameo is worn as a pin or folds out to hold the chain when worn as a pendant.
