From 1986 until 1991, the United States American Eagle Gold Bullion Coins were minted with Roman Numeral Dates instead of the traditional Arabic Numerals. In Roman Numerals, the date 1990 is represented by the characters MCMXC and is the shortest, simplest roman date in the series (only 5 characters). Curiously, you'll find many of your friends will be unable to determine the date (but that is another story entirely).  More importantly it was minted in unusually small numbers; only 210,210 were minted in 1990.  Compare that to the 1,344,520 minted in 1998.  The 1990 coin is both unusual and rare.
